MARINA HASSELBERG

Award-winning cellist Marina Hasselberg’s musical career led her from her birth country of Portugal across the world to Vancouver’s eclectic music scene.
Building on a strong classical background, she explores music that crosses genre boundaries. Marina has brought her rich sound to various orchestras, ensembles and productions, such as Early Music Vancouver, the Sound of Dragon Ensemble, and the Vancouver Island Symphony, as well as artists such as Father John Misty.
In recent years, she has shifted her attention to mainly focus on experimental music, improvisation and composition and has had a strong presence on the creative music scene, performing with leading local, Canadian and international improvisers.
She premiered solo cello and ensemble works, by composers Giorgio Magnanensi, Lisa Cay Miller, Howard Skempton, Carmen Braden, Andrea Young, Jordan Nobles, Mark Haney, John Korsrud, Tony Wilson, and many more.
Drawing on years of playing in various scenes, Marina Hasselberg is now merging her broad experiences to create a language of her own, which can be heard on her debut album, RED, released in October 2022 (Redshift Records). Red features written and improvised music for solo cello, electronics, and small ensembles. Recorded at Afterlife Studios in Vancouver, it was produced by Jesse Zubot.
